The Lake at Le Marteau

East end of the mixed stock lakes

About the lake

The lake was dug in the 60’s and has now  matured into a beautiful 2 acre water with a mixture of Beech, Birch, Oak, Chestnut and Conifers surrounding it.

We created Le Marteau to indulge our own love of Coarse angling and the beautiful French countryside. You will see why we chose this spot!

We wanted to develop a mixed fishery that would have fish biting when the Carp were not interested. So, shortly after we purchased Le Marteau in 2005 we drained the lake and the existing stock of fish (mainly small Roach and Pike) were removed.

We decided not to stock with Carp alone as there are plenty of lakes in France where you can sit in a bivvy and wait for hours to get a bite. The lake was set up with families in mind, so we have big fish for Dad and plenty of others for the kids. Currently there are Mirror Carp that go from 14-30lb, Bream to 5lb, Tench to 4lb, Roach and Perch to 2lb , a few Pike, Grass Carp and two very visible Golden Carp. Contact us to find out more.

Perch, bream, carp angling all in one lake

This mixed stock has been more difficult to achieve than we first thought, as the French regard some of the species anglers in the UK would cherish, as little more than pests. We still have a few species we would like to introduce so peoples' holiday experience can evolve with us!

The private lake is around two metres deep at it’s deepest, the bottom being gravel around the sides and silty in the middle.

Surrounded by trees, the lake is in a sheltered position so no matter what the weather you can find a comfortable place to fish from. We don’t really have fixed pegs as we have tried to keep the natural beauty of the lake but it is fishable most of the way round and varies up to 7 feet deep, the average being around 4 feet. The Carp need to be considered when fishing for the smaller species but as the lake has virtually no snags really heavy tackle is not needed. There are four rods, reels, landing net and unhooking mat for you to use, just bring  terminal tackle. On one side of the lake we have 2 acres of woodland which is full of birds, Red Squirrels and lizards of various colours and sizes, all of which are harmless. The wood is very thick and I would advise caution if allowing children to play unsupervised. France does have snakes but nothing more dangerous than the Adder you could encounter in the UK. Early in the morning you may see the deer that drink from the lake.
